A beautiful hardback quarterbound edition of a great Japanese classic, the tale of a group of young boys with a warped sense of masculinity. Lyrical, suspenseful and deeply ominous.

A band of savage thirteen-year-old boys reject the adult world as illusory, hypocritical, and sentimental, and train themselves in a brutal callousness they call ‘objectivity’. When the mother of one of them begins an affair with a ship’s officer, he and his friends idealise the man at first; but it is not long before they conclude that he is in fact soft and romantic. They regard this disillusionment as an act of betrayal on his part – and the retribution is deliberate and horrifying.

The novel was also adapted into a 1976 film starring Kris Kristofferson and Sarah Miles, and adapted in 1990 by Hans Werne Henze into his opera Das verratene Meer (The Betrayed Sea).

These editions are perfect for giving to the booklovers in your life and will include a unique Other Words Books blank greeting card.
