Olga Tokarczuk has done it again! A powerful mix of gothic horror and philosophical ideas stirred together with the help of some interesting locally-foraged mushrooms. Set in an out-of-the-way pre-first world war German mountain village complete with sanatorium, and reminiscent of Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain, despite its (mostly) male cast of characters this is quite possibly one of the best feminist novels you will ever read.
Funny, clever and poignant. Definitely one of my books of the year.
Two brand new copies available in the beautiful Fitzcarraldo edition.
