“The essence of life is in solitude — wouldn’t you agree? All unions are built on falsehood. People can only get to know each other up to a point and then they make up the rest, until one day, seeing their mistake, they turn their backs on sadness and run away.”
This powerful love story from Turkish author Sabahattin Ali takes place 1920s Berlin. Difficult to say much more without giving away the story but this novel is a miniature masterpiece, deserving of a wider audience, with an atmosphere full of yearning and melancholy.
Sabahattin Ali (1907-1948) published many short stories, poems and articles dealing with themes of social injustice and corruption, and many were censored by the Turkish government. He was arrested and sent to prison in 1931, accused of making propaganda at the school where he was appointed as a German teacher. Subsequently banned from teaching, on attempting to escape from Turkey he was killed, probably by the security services, at the Bulgarian border in April 1948.
