Playful, offbeat and fun, this post-modernist puzzle of a book has always been one of my favourite works of Italian fiction. At the time of his death in 1985, Calvino was the most translated contemporary Italian writer. If you haven’t come across his work before then this immersive and inventive novel would be a great place to start.
